Acute nasal injury.

چکیده
Nasal injuries are a common presentation to emergency departments and primary care settings. Acute nasal injury often occurs as a result of trauma and can lead to epistaxis, nasal fracture, or even nasal septal haematoma. Epistaxis accounts for 33% of all admissions to emergency ear, nose, and throat (ENT) departments and head and neck surgery facilities, and it can require cautery or packing. Occasionally surgical intervention might be required. Nasal fractures are the third most common type of fracture and the most common type of facial fracture. 3 The nasal spine lengthens and begins to ossify at around 3 years of age, completing its growth and ossification during puberty. Nasal fractures are therefore predominantly seen in the adult population. The incidence of nasal fractures is rising in the United Kingdom, especially among girls and women, and is most commonly caused by assault. Other forms of trauma, such as sporting injury, account for most other cases. Nasal septal haematomas are rarer, but require urgent evaluation to prevent nasal deformity. A recent study showed that after clinical teaching to junior emergency doctors, appropriate nasal examination and documentation rates increased from 30% to 97%, and the rate of unnecessary facial and nasal radiographs performed also decreased from 42% to 0%. Fetus nasal injury after maternal blunt trauma during pregnancy, a case report
Introduction: Neonatal period damages occur due to mechanical forces (compression, stretching) during the birth process are classified as birth trauma. Various maternofetal factors, such as maternal diabetes, breech or other noncephalic presentations and birth weight might have been effective in developing prenatal trauma. Shoulder dystocia, which is common in neonates` of diabetic mothers, usu...
متن کاملIn situ naphthalene bioactivation and nasal airflow cause region-specific injury patterns in the nasal mucosa of rats exposed to naphthalene by inhalation.
Despite the fact that naphthalene (NA), a volatile, ubiquitous air pollutant, was recently identified as a probable human carcinogen, little is known about nasal cytotoxicity from inhaled NA. To define and compare acute nasal injury from inhalation and systemic NA exposures, male Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to filtered air; 3.4 or 23.8 ppm NA by inhalation for 4 h; or to 0, 25, 50, 100, or...
متن کاملEarly nasal injury resulting from the use of nasal prongs in preterm infants with very low birth weight: a pilot study
OBJECTIVE To analyze the incidence of early-onset nasal injury in infants with very low birth weight and indication for noninvasive ventilation via nasal prongs. METHODS A prospective case series of infants with gestational age <37 weeks, weight <1.500 g and postnatal age <29 days. The patients were evaluated three times daily from the installation of nasal prongs to the 3rd day of use. The p...
متن کاملNasal potential difference to detect Na+ channel dysfunction in acute lung injury.
Pulmonary fluid clearance is regulated by the active transport of Na(+) and Cl(-) through respiratory epithelial ion channels. Ion channel dysfunction contributes to the pathogenesis of various pulmonary fluid disorders including high-altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) and neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). Nasal potential difference (NPD) measurement allows an in vivo investigation of ...
متن کاملSidestream tobacco smoke exposure acutely alters human nasal mucociliary clearance.
Nasal mucociliary clearance (NMC) is a biomarker of nasal mucosal function. Tobacco smokers have been shown to have abnormal NMC, but the acute effect of environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) on nonsmokers is unknown. This study evaluated acute tobacco smoke-induced alterations in NMC in 12 healthy adults. Subjects were studied on 2 days, separated by at least 1 week. Subjects underwent a 60-min co...
